CRS History in Uganda
The Republic of Uganda is a land locked country in East Africa, bordering Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Uganda is still a rural country with agriculture being the dominating sector of the economy employing over 80% of the work force.
The northern region has experienced 17 years of complex emergency caused by political instability, drought and economic collapse, which called for intervention by international humanitarian agencies. The western region of Uganda is a disaster prone area with a history of earthquakes, landslides, flooding, drought and pestilence. In addition, there have been large population displacements following rebel atrocities. Conflict and natural disasters, coupled with low levels of community capacity, increased the vulnerability of the people and diminished their quality of life. CRS has responded to the emergencies in both regions with a number of projects to restore the desperate lives.
