Photo Tour: Providing Care in the Face of Peril
In war-torn Democratic Republic of the Congo, severe poverty, natural disasters and a lack of infrastructure are only part of the suffering that runs within this central African nation. Brutal war has gripped the Congo off and on since the mid-1990s. More than 5 million Congolese have died and hundreds of thousands have been displaced. The conflicts' most horrifying legacy: the women and girls who have been violently raped. But because of Catholic Relief Services and specialized gynecological training, doctors working in rural health zones in eastern Congo are now able to care for these women.
Catholic Relief Services' Lane Hartill recently traveled to Congo and takes us on a photo tour, revealing the hardships faced by Congolese living in remote areas. Photos by Lane Hartill/CRS
